Cape Town – The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) says efforts to secure the release and return of South African delegates detained during the Global Sumud Flotilla are well underway.
The Israeli navy intercepted the flotilla, which included about 45 vessels carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza, preventing over 400 activists and politicians from reaching the territory.
DIRCO spokesperson Chrispin Phiri confirmed that South African officials met the detainees at Negev prison, where they were found to be in good health and good spirits, and that arrangements for their safe return are progressing.
