Cape Town – Nosekeni Mandela, wife of ANC MP Mandla Mandela, has issued an emotional plea for her husband’s safe return after he was confirmed to be among South Africans on board a humanitarian flotilla intercepted by Israeli forces en route to Gaza.
The flotilla, carrying aid supplies intended for Palestinians in the besieged enclave, was reportedly stopped by the Israeli navy on Friday. International reports indicate that several vessels attempting to breach the maritime blockade were boarded and diverted to Israeli ports.
Speaking to SABC News, a visibly distressed Nosekeni Mandela described the ordeal as a “very difficult time” for the Mandela family, urging South Africans and the international community to rally for the safe release of her husband and other activists on board.
“It’s a very challenging time, but we are trying to be very strong for my children, and we have to stay strong to ensure he is returned to us safely, Nosekeni said.
“We are very scared for his safety and we just pray that he is returned to us.”

Mandla, who is the grandson of former President Nelson Mandela and chief of the Mvezo Traditional Council, has long been a vocal supporter of the Palestinian cause. He has publicly compared the plight of Palestinians to apartheid South Africa, calling for international solidarity and humanitarian relief efforts.
Ramaphosa described the interception as a violation of international law and the sovereignty of nations whose flags flew on the vessels.
In a statement released by the Presidency, Ramaphosa said: “On behalf of our Government and nation, I call on Israel to immediately release the South Africans abducted in international waters, and to release other nationals who have tried to reach Gaza with humanitarian aid.”
The interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla is another grave offence by Israel of global solidarity and sentiment that is aimed at relieving suffering in Gaza and advancing peace in the region.

He added: “The interception of the flotilla in international waters is contrary to international law and violates the sovereignty of every nation whose flag was flown on the dozens of vessels in the flotilla.
The flotilla initiative, backed by international activists, aimed to deliver essential supplies such as food, medicine and clothing to civilians in Gaza, who continue to face dire shortages amid Israel’s ongoing blockade and the escalation of conflict in the region.
It remains unclear how many South Africans were on board and whether any were injured during the interception.
