Cape Town – Former president Thabo Mbeki will this weekend lead a landmark political school class for the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal, marking his first engagement with provincial structures since the party’s leadership reconfiguration earlier this year.
According to EWN, the political school is part of the ANC’s “renewal and rebuilding programme,” which comes after the party’s disappointing performance in the 2024 national and provincial elections. The initiative is designed to provide training and ideological clarity to ANC members at branch, regional and provincial levels.
ANC KwaZulu-Natal spokesperson Fanele Sibisi said the event carries major significance for the organisation in the province. “This political school will provide ANC members and leaders with clear guidance on what must be done to regain the trust of the people and to ensure that the ANC once again stands as a trusted force rooted in people’s power,” Sibisi stated.
As reported by Central News, the ANC in KZN has been under pressure to rebuild internal cohesion after factional battles and declining voter support in strongholds like eThekwini. Mbeki’s involvement is seen as an attempt by the national leadership to bring gravitas and credibility to the renewal process.
Party insiders also told EWN that the timing is crucial, as KZN branches are preparing for regional conferences in November, where new leadership will be elected. The ANC hopes that structured political education under Mbeki’s guidance will strengthen unity ahead of those contests.
Mbeki, who has often spoken about the need to “return to the ANC’s core values,” is expected to focus his lecture on principles of governance, ethical leadership, and reconnecting with grassroots communities.
