Cape Town – Police in the Western Cape have arrested eight men after uncovering a cache of firearms, including AK-47 rifles, pistols and ammunition, during an intelligence-driven raid on a Bellville flat on Monday.
Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Andrè Traut said members of the Provincial Operational Coordination Combat Team seized six AK-47 rifles, eight 9mm pistols and ammunition during the search.
“According to preliminary information, the firearms had been transported from KwaZulu-Natal to Cape Town. During the search, the members seized six AK-47 rifles and eight 9mm pistols with ammunition. The suspects were unable to produce valid firearm licences or permits for the weapons,” Traut said.

“As a result, eight adult male suspects were arrested for the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition. They are expected to appear in the Bellville magistrate’s court once they have been formally charged.”
Once charged, the suspects will appear in court.

Western Cape police management commended the operation, saying the seizure prevented the weapons from being used in serious crimes.
