Durban — A juvenile baboon has sparked concern after reportedly arriving in Durban from Cape Town, with wildlife rescuers warning of the animal’s vulnerability in an unfamiliar urban environment.
The young baboon was first observed on a docked ship in Durban Harbour before disembarking and fleeing into the city.
Rescuers Daniel Stewart and Steve Smit, described on social media as the “dream team,” have been tracking the animal throughout the day but have so far been unsuccessful in safely capturing it.
Carol Booth, who shared the update on Facebook, emphasised that the baboon poses no threat to humans or pets.
She urged the public not to approach, catch, or harm the animal, warning that baboons in the area are often at risk of stoning or other acts of violence due to local superstitions.
“This is just a youngster needing rescue,” Booth said. “Baboons are not endemic to Durban, and this little one will not find any of its own kind. We hope and pray Steve and Daniel find it and ensure it is returned to its natural habitat.”
Anyone who spots the baboon is urged to call the Monkey Helpline at 082 411 5444 or 082 659 4711. Rescuers said the baboon is frightened and bewildered but should be left alone while help arrives.
