Cape Town – Convicted underworld figure Nafiz Modack has been sentenced to an effective seven years in prison for corruption by the Cape Town Regional Court.
The Justice, Crime Prevention and Security Cluster confirmed on Friday that the 44-year-old was handed a 10-year sentence, three years of which were suspended for five years, effectively leaving Modack to serve seven years behind bars.
“The accused will effectively serve seven years direct imprisonment. The court ordered that the accused be declared unfit to possess a firearm,” a statement read.
Modack was convicted on 6 June 2025 following a Hawks Serious Corruption Investigation probe into his dealings with former senior police officer Brigadier Kolindren Govender.

Govender has already pleaded guilty and been sentenced.
According to the Hawks, Modack paid Govender R146,000 in gratification to secure “special treatment” in an ongoing police investigation. The payments were intended to prevent cooperation between a SAPS Paarl Vehicle Identification Section officer and an investigating officer at Cape Town Central SAPS.
As a result of Govender’s interference, a Mercedes-Benz linked to Modack and at the centre of the investigation was never seized.
The sentencing marks another legal blow for Modack, who has long been accused of orchestrating and benefiting from criminal networks in Cape Town.
