Cape Town – Investigations are underway by the South African Police Service following the senseless murder of Gauteng National Taxi Alliance (NTA) chairperson Thamsanqa Moyo.
According to Arrive Alive, Moyo was gunned down on the Soweto Highway while travelling in his Toyota Hilux. His vehicle has since been towed from the scene.
Police confirmed that a manhunt is underway for the suspects involved in the shooting, which took place on Thursday morning, 18 September, at approximately 9:30 a.m. in Diepkloof, south of Johannesburg.

Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant General Mavela Masondo, confirmed the shooting of the chairperson–explaining that the incident took place at approximately 9.30 am as Moyo was driving along the Soweto Highway, in Diepkloof.
“The victim was blocked by suspects who were driving in two vehicles”, said Masondo.
“The suspects fired several shots at the victim. He was certified dead at the scene.
“The details are still sketchy at the moment. We can confirm that it has happened”, he said.

Transport Minister Barbara Creecy and Deputy Minister Mkhuleko Hlengwa expressed their shock at Moyo’s “senseless” killing.
They extended their condolences to Moyo’s family, the NTA leadership and its members, as well as the broader taxi industry.

Upon hearing the news, Minister Creecy contacted Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia, who assured her that an investigation team was already being assembled.
Creecy and Hlengwa have appealed for calm and urged the public to give police space to carry out their work so that those responsible for this “barbaric act” can face the full might of the law, National Spokesperson Collen Msibi said.
