Pretoria – KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has alleged that Democratic Alliance MP Dianne Kohler Barnard violated the law and helped stir up attacks on the Crime Intelligence unit.
He accused Barnard of using secret intelligence to attack the Crime Intelligence unit instead of raising issues through Parliament’s Joint Standing Committee on Intelligence.
“What we see here is a person who has a legal obligation to keep her mouth shut and go to the joint standing committee and present and ventilate and hold the division account. But she does not use that platform, but goes publicly and discloses this,” Mkhwanazi said.

He also alleged that National Coloured Congress MP Fadiel Adams obtained classified crime intelligence information and dealt with it “recklessly.”
Mkhwanazi said Adams, who is not a member of that committee, “recklessly” handled and shared similar intelligence, opening cases and sending complaints to suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu despite lacking evidence or jurisdiction.

Mkhwanazi warned that their actions undermined the work of KwaZulu-Natal’s Provincial Political Task Team and potentially compromised ongoing investigations.
