Mothibistad, Northern Cape – A 66-year-old man has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for raping a mentally challenged child, following a judgment delivered by the Mothibistad Regional Court on 17 September 2025.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Northern Cape welcomed the ruling, noting that the accused was also declared unfit to possess a firearm and will have his details entered into the National Sexual Offences Register.
The case dates back to 8 October 2023, when the 18-year-old victim was walking to church in Kagung Village, Mothibistad, at around 11:00. The accused, who lived nearby, offered her a lift.
Instead of taking her to church, he drove to a dumping site and forcibly raped her. After the assault, he gave the victim R30 and instructed her not to report the incident.
Brigadier Kenneth Baloyi, Acting District Commissioner of the John Taolo Gaetsewe District, praised Detective Sergeant Jamine Melissa Armstrong of the Kuruman Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit for her “meticulous investigative work” that secured the conviction.
“The outcome is a strong demonstration that justice has been served on behalf of the victim and that dangerous offenders are being removed from society for lengthy periods,” Baloyi said.
SAPS has reiterated its commitment to protecting vulnerable members of the community and ensuring that perpetrators of sexual offences are held accountable.
