Cape Town – The DA is expected to announce federal council chair Helen Zille as its Johannesburg mayoral candidate this weekend, positioning her to contest next year’s local government elections against the ANC’s Dada Morero.
According to Citizen, party insiders say Zille has already begun overseeing the Johannesburg caucus from Cape Town and is preparing to relocate.
“She [Zille] is a veteran politician, she is a master tactician. She is exactly what Johannesburg needs to turn things around,” the report quoted a source as saying.
According to the Daily Maverick, the decision comes after three high-profile candidates turned down the position to lead the DA into next year’s elections – claiming that the job was too difficult with small remuneration.
At the time, she told the Daily Maverick that it would take five years to turn things around in Johannesburg.
“It will take more than five years (now) to stop the rot and turn the tide,” she said.
