Cape Town – ANC first deputy secretary-general Nomvula Mokonyane says the party is “more than ready” for a female president — and she’s prepared to stand for the position ahead of the 2027 elections if nominated.
In an interview with TimesLIVE, she criticised entrenched patriarchy within the ANC, noting how women are often used against one another to block genuine female leadership.
“The ANC is a very conservative organisation. Patriarchy works stronger when women are used against one another,” the report quoted her as saying.

Mokonyane agreed with Dr Gwen Ramokgopa’s comments on the lack of support among women in the party and recalled the 1991 ANC conference where lobbying secured a 30% quota for women leaders.
She argued it’s now time to support women for the presidency, stressing that women have always been active in the liberation struggle and should not have to justify their readiness to lead.
She said the question is no longer whether the ANC is ready for a woman president but whether women are supported and eligible, adding: “Even if there are six women contesting for president, nothing stops that.” Mokonyane confirmed she would accept a nomination without hesitation.
