Cape Town – The South African Government has called for calm amid ongoing water shortages, following protests in Westbury and Coronationville, Johannesburg.
Deputy Government Spokesperson William Baloyi said in a statement that the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) acknowledged the seriousness of the communities’ concerns.
“The City of Johannesburg, through Joburg Water, has announced medium-to-long term measures aimed at sustainably addressing the water challenges.
“These include measures to mitigate against the strain caused by low water levels in some of the reservoirs supplying the affected areas, and work by Joburg Water to complete and commission the new Brixton reservoir and tower by the end of next month (October 2025).

“Furthermore, Joburg Water is working on stabilising the system through managing demand with the aim to improve reservoir levels”, said Baloyi.
The government has implemented immediate interim measures to address the current water supply challenges and has urged communities to allow workers to carry out these measures without interference, warning that disruptions could delay their implementation.
GCIS noted that while the Constitution, under Section 17, protects the right of communities to raise grievances through protests, this right should be exercised peacefully and without damage to property.
Baloyi emphasized that the destruction of infrastructure and acts of violence only serve to delay the very solutions being demanded by communities.
