The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) condemned the action under the National Road Traffic Act (NRTA), pointing out that pedestrians are not permitted on freeways except in emergencies, and warning content creators not to risk lives for social media “likes”, reported IOL.
Penny released a follow-up video explaining that she had been on a long-distance drive, stopped to stretch, got “tired and overwhelmed,” and decided to dance with her friend to let off some steam. She also denied using alcohol, saying she does not drink and was fully sober during the incident. She cautioned others: “Please don’t be on the freeway doing what I did because it’s not safe.”

The RTMC reiterated that stunts such as this on national roads could have tragic consequences, and that pedestrians’ presence on freeways (outside emergencies) is strictly prohibited. According to road crash data cited by IOL, pedestrian deaths account for about 35-40% of road fatalities in South Africa.
