Accra – More than 200 corruption cases have been opened in Ghana as the administration of John Mahama attempts to recover stolen state assets, the president said Wednesday.
Mahama, who assumed office in January, has vowed to tackle corruption and retrieve misappropriated state funds as the west African nation emerges from a severe economic crisis.
“Across multiple fronts, active pursuits and prosecutions are well underway,” Mahama told a news conference, referencing his administration’s “Operation Recover All Loot” anti-graft campaign.
“Over 200 cases are under active investigation,” he added.
Corruption investigations this year have tripped up the country’s chief justice, a former head of the petroleum regulator and a former finance minister.

In May, the president punished more than 40 of his ministers and appointees for failing to declare their assets, docking their salaries.
However, opposition politicians protested earlier this year when a senior leader of the New Patriotic Party — which Mahama defeated in last year’s elections — was investigated for financial irregularities.
“Every single case of corruption that needs to be investigated is being looked into, and once evidence is found to ground the prosecution, that will happen and happen swiftly,” Mahama told journalists.
The president also said that an ongoing crackdown on unregulated artisanal gold mining had resulted in the seizure of “hundreds of excavators, water pumps and other heavy equipment”.
The gold-rich country has been battling an explosion in illegal mining, known locally as “galamsey”, and the environmental pollution, threats to cocoa production and political corruption that have flourished in its wake in recent years.
Corruption allegations trailed Mahama’s previous tenure as president, from 2012 to 2017, although no charges were formally filed against him.
