South Africa mourns — legendary actress Nandi Nyembe dead at 75

Cape Town – Legendary South African actress Nandi Nyembe has died at the age of 75, her family and the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture confirmed on Saturday, 23 August.

“It is with profound sorrow that the Nyembe Family, together with the National Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, announce the passing of one of South Africa’s most treasured icons of the arts, Mam’ Nandi Nyembe,” read a statement.

“Mam’ Nandi was far more than an actress; she was the very soul of South African storytelling. A teacher, a guide, and a mother to this nation, she carried our struggles, our laughter, and our victories through every performance with truth, dignity, and heart. Through her life and work, she gave our people pride and our stories, a purpose.”

Nyembe, celebrated for her iconic roles in Zone 14, Isibaya, and Soul City, was remembered by her family as a beloved mother and grandmother, and by Minister Gayton McKenzie as a national treasure whose legacy will live on.

Earlier this year, Nyembe revealed she had been struggling financially after spending her savings on her son’s medical care, highlighting the lack of pensions and royalties in the entertainment industry. Despite her declining health, she insisted she still wanted to work and not rely on handouts.

Her passing marks the loss of one of South Africa’s most respected actresses, whose influence and artistry touched generations.
