Cape Town – ANC MP Soviet Lekganyane has defended his appointment as chair of an ad hoc parliamentary committee investigating allegations of corruption in the police service, including those involving suspended ANC police minister Senzo Mchunu.
The allegations were made by KZN police commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, who accused Mchunu of interfering with investigations and disbanding the task team probing political killings.
Opposition parties, particularly ActionSA and the EFF, raised concerns over Lekganyane’s impartiality due to his ANC affiliation.
ActionSA warned that his appointment could erode public trust, while EFF leader Julius Malema emphasised that the issue was with the ANC holding the chair, not Lekganyane personally.
ActionSA MP Dereleen James says having an ANC member as chairperson of the Ad Hoc Committee to look into allegations made by KZN Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi is a conflict of interest. ANC MP Soviet Lekganyane was elected chairperson of the committee.

Lekganyane rejected the criticism, saying he should not be judged by his party affiliation and that the committee’s integrity should come from its collective conduct.
“Allegations made by Mkhwanazi are not against the ANC; they are only made against one member of the ANC, and others whose political organisations we don’t know,” he said during an interview with SABC News.
“Let us not put the cart before the horse because we are going to invite Mkhwanazi before the committee, and we don’t know [what will come out] as he will be expounding on the allegations.”
Lekganyane emphasised the importance of fairness, integrity, and public accountability in handling the investigation.
