Cape Town – EFF leader Julius Malema has threatened to sue Patriotic Alliance (PA) leader Gayton McKenzie for defamation after McKenzie insulted him on social media, calling him “stupid” and likening him to a bank robber.
McKenzie made the remarks during a Facebook Live on Monday, following the EFF’s 12th birthday rally, claiming the EFF is failing in by-elections and questioning Malema’s wealth.
“Do you know what Malema and I have in common? We are both bank robbers. He was robbing VBS. We are ex-criminal colleagues. I used to rob banks; he is robbing banks too,” he said.

McKenzie’s remarks about VBS reference long-standing allegations that Julius Malema and Floyd Shivambu were involved in defrauding the now-defunct mutual bank.
He also questioned how Malema could afford to live in a high-end suburb on a politician’s salary, accusing him of living like a billionaire without being able to explain the source of his wealth.
McKenzie himself was sentenced to 17 years in prison in 1996 for armed robberies and was released in 2003 after exposing a criminal syndicate while incarcerated at Grootvlei Prison.
In response on EWN’s Politricking podcast, Malema denied ever committing crimes and dismissed McKenzie as a “prisoner”.
The leader of the red berets insisted he has never been involved in any form of robbery and made it clear he won’t hold back from pursuing further defamation lawsuits — pointing to his earlier legal win against PA deputy Kenny Kunene, who once called him a cockroach.
Despite their coalition in Johannesburg, Malema said he does not consider the PA an ally.
