Cape Town – Suspended Patriotic Alliance (PA) deputy president Kenny Kunene has resigned as a proportional representation councillor in the City of Johannesburg with immediate effect.
His resignation follows his suspension by PA leader Gayton McKenzie after Kunene was seen at the home of Katiso “KT” Molefe, a suspect in the 2022 murder of popular DJ Oupa John Sefoka, known as DJ Sumbody.
In his resignation letter, Kunene said he was stepping away from public life while the party investigates the allegations against him, which he claims are unfounded.
“I regret to inform you that I have tendered my resignation as a Proportional Representation Councillor for the Patriotic Alliance, effective immediately, and will thus be unable to continue as a member of your mayoral committee, responsible for transport,” he wrote.

“I am stepping aside from public life, for a period, while my party satisfies itself as to certain allegations that have been raised against me, which are unfounded, but I have nevertheless agreed it would be in the public interest for me to await the clearing of my name before considering a return to public service and duty.”
He expressed pride in his contributions as a councillor and MMC for transport and pledged continued loyalty to the party’s mission.
“I believe I have always committed myself to serve the residents of Johannesburg with vigour, authenticity, and vision. During my two years as an MMC, I worked to be a force for good, championing accessible transport, confronting inefficiencies and challenging systemic rot within our institutions.
“I remain a loyal patriot towards our broader political mission and will remain dedicated to the upliftment of our communities,” Kunene said.
Kunene explained his presence at Molefe’s house was to arrange an exclusive interview for his online publication, Africa Global News.
The PA must now fill his vacant council seat.
In a statement, McKenzie confirmed that Kenny Kunene will not hold any official role in the party while an investigation into his conduct is underway.
“He has agreed to cooperate with an investigation, which will be led by a competent legal team. Until such time as he is fully cleared, he has agreed to step aside from his political role in the PA, and he will therefore not act and work in any official capacity in the party while on suspension.”
McKenzie said the process to appoint investigators has begun and urged party members to stay united during this period.
Kunene has agreed to fully cooperate with a legal team leading the probe and will remain suspended until he is cleared.
