Cape Town – The South African Police Service (SAPS) has denied knowledge of any arrest warrant for National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola.
This follows claims by EFF leader Julius Malema, who alleged that Masemola is to be arrested for conspiring with recently arrested Crime Intelligence head Lieutenant-General Dumisani Khumalo in a corruption case.
“There is a warrant of arrest against Masemola. It’s out. I don’t know why he’s not being picked up. It means someone, somewhere, is playing politics, and somehow they want to undermine, once more, the independence of our justice system. Masamola is being arrested for what he did with Khumalo in the crime intelligence,” he said.
Malema believes political interference is delaying the arrest and has cited previous accusations by KZN Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi against senior officials as part of a wider political strategy.

“Masemola was supposed to be arrested that week when Mkhwanazi had a press conference. So I thought Mkhwanazi’s was a preemptive strategy, and perhaps the arrest of Masemola is delayed by that or will be seen as if we are fighting back or anything of that sort. So it’s a matter we’re paying very close attention to, because we cannot allow any more people to abuse their positions.
“Once a warrant of arrest is issued, it means there is some sort of evidence of wrongdoing, which must be tested at a court. So, we will have to make sure that this is followed through,” said Malema.
However, according to The Citizen, SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Matha said no such warrant exists, suggesting Malema should be asked for more information.
