Cape Town – Solidarity, the trade union representing FlySafair pilots, is pushing for a fair rostering system that ensures adequate rest and family time for pilots, as it enters mediation talks with the airline via the CCMA on Wednesday.
The union says a new scheduling system introduced by FlySafair has disrupted long-standing working conditions, negatively affecting pilots’ well-being and family life, Times Live reported.
According to the report, Solidarity plans to request the CCMA’s assistance in reaching an agreement that provides for:
-
At least one weekend off in every five-week cycle.
-
Two consecutive rest days.

-
Flexibility to swap shifts due to family responsibilities.
-
Compensation if pilots are made to fly on their days off.
The union says these proposals won’t cost the airline extra, and if accepted, it may reconsider its salary demands,” reported IOL.
“A schedule compromise will not incur any additional costs for the employer. If FlySafair complies with these reasonable requests, Solidarity will be prepared to review the salary increase demand and all other related claims and be willing to compromise,” the report quoted the union as saying.
Solidarity’s Helgard Cronje says the FlySAfair pilots who are currently on a strike can make double what they make if they go international. FlySAfair has cancelled about 8% of its flights today as more than 200 of its pilots go on strike over salaries.

FlySafair announced on Tuesday that all scheduled flights for the day were operating as planned, despite ongoing industrial action. While two flights were cancelled — one from Cape Town to Lanseria and the return leg — the airline said it acted quickly to manage the situation.
The airline had already reduced its flight schedule to minimise disruption and communicated changes to affected customers via SMS and email.
