Johannesburg – A 32-year-old man was arrested in Kensington, Johannesburg, on Tuesday for tampering with traffic lights and impersonating a Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officer.
According to the JMPD, the suspect was apprehended after officers observed him switching off the traffic lights at the busy intersection of Albertina Sisulu Road and 8th Street, before proceeding to direct traffic.
The man, who reportedly told officers he needed money, was swiftly removed from the intersection and taken into custody. He is currently being held at the Jeppe SAPS station.

JMPD spokespersons have confirmed the charges include tampering with municipal infrastructure and impersonating a traffic officer.
This arrest sends a clear message that the JMPD will not tolerate any acts that compromise the safety and flow of our city’s traffic, or any impersonation of our dedicated officers,” said JMPD Chief of Police, Commissioner Patrick Jaca.
The department has cautioned motorists not to give money to unauthorised individuals directing traffic and urged residents to remain alert and report any suspicious activity by calling 011 375 5911 or 0800 002 587.
