Cape Town – KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has accused Police Minister Senzo Mchunu and Deputy National Commissioner Shadrack Sibiya of interfering in police operations, including the disbanding of a task team investigating political killings.
Speaking during a dramatic press briefing, Mkhwanazi, dressed in combat gear and flanked by armed officers, said he would lay criminal charges against Mchunu and alleged the minister influenced the shutdown of investigations uncovering links between politicians, police, prosecutors, and a drug cartel.
He claimed 121 case dockets were removed and shelved under Sibiya’s directive, allegedly without authorisation from the national police leadership.
Mkhwanazi defended National Commissioner Fannie Masemola and accused those targeting him of trying to destabilise the police.
He declared himself “combat ready”, vowed to confront criminal elements within the police, and labelled Sibiya a “criminal”.
Mkhwanazi warned that political interference was compromising high-level investigations and justice
