Parktown – Three men were arrested on Monday, 1 July 2025, in Lyttelton, Gauteng, after they were caught with large amounts of counterfeit currency and a printing machine used to produce fake banknotes.
According to police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, members of the Lyttelton police station’s undercover unit were conducting operations at a local shopping centre when they noticed a man acting suspiciously near an ATM.
Officers approached and searched the individual, discovering a bag filled with fake cash and blank papers.

“Upon further questioning, the man led the officers to a house where more counterfeit notes were found, along with a machine used to print fake rand and dollar notes,” Nevhuhulwi said.
Two more men who were found inside the house were also arrested on the scene.
The trio is expected to appear in court soon on charges of possession of counterfeit money.
Investigations into the origin and extent of the operation are ongoing.
