Cape Town – Fuel prices in South Africa are expected to rise in July after four months of declines, driven by a spike in international oil prices.
These hikes are based on unaudited data, with official adjustments to be confirmed by the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy.
Brent crude prices surged in June due to geopolitical tensions, averaging higher than the previous review period.
A stronger rand helped soften the impact, otherwise the increases would have been more severe.
Adding to the burden, fuel tax hikes introduced in June further strained motorists, with total fuel taxes now at R6.37 per litre of petrol.
The Automobile Association has warned that relying on fuel levies to plug budget holes is unsustainable and calls for greater transparency.
