Cape Town – Former deputy minister of trade, industry and competition, Andrew Whitfield, has criticized his dismissal as an “unnecessary provocation” that could threaten the fragile unity within South Africa’s Government of National Unity (GNU).
Whitfield believes the move — allegedly linked to an unauthorised overseas trip taken four months ago — is disproportionate and inconsistently enforced, especially since he had acknowledged the transgression in writing but received no response from the Presidency.
“I think it’s an unnecessary provocation on an issue that could have been resolved earlier and secondly, differently,” EWN quoted him as saying.
The Presidency confirmed the removal of Whitfield from his role on Thursday.
