ActionSA national chairperson Michael Beaumont said the party continues to enjoy a constructive relationship with the ANC in other municipalities, particularly in Tshwane, and stressed that the issue lies squarely with Morero.
The no-confidence motion, tabled by the Democratic Alliance (DA), failed on Wednesday.
Although ActionSA did not support the ANC in defending Morero, the party made it clear that its abstention was a targeted protest over what it described as Morero’s unilateral decision-making.
Beaumont said the party saw no reason to defend the mayor, pointing to issues like non-functioning traffic lights as evidence of governance failure.
“We have communiccated to the ANC that we will not be voting to defend Dada Morero in today’s Council meeting. We have ccome to this conclusion because frankly speaking, service delivery in Johannesburg has collapsed…,” Beaumont said just before the vote.
He emphasised that ActionSA’s stance should not be misinterpreted as a breakdown in its working relationship with the ANC in Johannesburg.
“We have been at pains to point out to the ANC that this is not an act of hostility against the party, it’s simply the fact that ActionSA cannot vote to defend this mayor,” he said, according to EWN.
Despite this assurance, tensions escalated as the ANC later supported a motion of no confidence against ActionSA councillor and former Speaker Nobuhle Tembe on the same day.
