Cape Town – Stellenbosch University (SU) has officially installed South African Reserve Bank Governor Lesetja Kganyago as its 16th Chancellor during a formal ceremony held at the Endler Hall on Friday.
Despite a rainy start to the day, the mood inside the packed venue was celebratory as Kganyago took on the largely ceremonial role, which involves presiding over degree ceremonies and serving as a symbolic figurehead for the institution.
Delivering an impassioned inaugural address, Kganyago said he accepted the position “with a deep sense of responsibility,” acknowledging the university’s complex legacy and the pressing need for transformation.
“Universities reflect who we are and what we aspire to be,” Kganyago told an audience of dignitaries, academics and community leaders. He urged the institution to remain a defender of academic freedom, while advancing innovation, inclusion, and social justice.

He also called on the University to confront its past and embrace change, referencing the institution’s historical links to apartheid and quoting poet Antjie Krog to highlight the pain of unresolved wounds.
“Let us reject racism and resistance to change,” Kganyago said. “Diversity and inclusion are not just moral imperatives — they are vital for intellectual exploration and justice.”
The Chancellor praised ongoing transformation efforts at SU, including work under former Vice-Chancellor Prof Wim de Villiers and social impact initiatives such as the Save7 organ transplant campaign and student-led projects on food security and rehabilitation.
SU Vice-Chancellor Prof Deresh Ramjugernath welcomed Kganyago’s appointment, calling him “a leader of exceptional courage, wisdom and steadiness.” He added that Kganyago’s values aligned with the University’s mission to empower through education.
