Cape Town – South African award-winning documentary filmmaker Godisamang Khunou earned top honours at the American Black Film Festival (ABFF), where her feature film Black Women and Sex won the award for Best Documentary Feature.
In a post on X, the film festival announced its 29th edition that took place in Miami Beach, Florida from June 11 to 15, continuing its annual tradition of celebrating Black excellence in film, television, and entertainment.

Khunou, a Johannesburg-born filmmaker, made a powerful impact on the global stage with the premiere of her film at the prestigious ABFF in Miami, under the theme of “Women’s fight for rights”.
According to MyIDFA, the film explores the tension between Black womanhood and the politics of sex by delving into the lived experiences of a South African trans woman, a Nigerian woman raised in a polygamous household, and a Zambian woman criminalised for her sexuality.

Her documentary, which is driven by a deep sense of purpose and a commitment to authentic storytelling, resonated with audiences and critics alike — ultimately earning the coveted Best Documentary Award.
In a post on X, she expressed her joy in receiving the prestigious award.
