Airborne nightmare ends in relief – Children recover after festival fall

Cape Town – Two young children who were thrown into the air when a jumping castle was swept up by strong winds during a school event at Protearif Laerskool in Krugersdorp are reportedly now recovering well.

The incident occurred on May 31, 2025, during the school’s Protea Fees festival, when an unsecured inflatable was lifted into the sky, with a viral video capturing the children falling mid-air.

According to The Citizen, the inflatable rose to about two or three storeys high before the children fell out, sustaining a skull fracture and a broken arm.

Footage from the event suggests the castle may not have been anchored properly.

Protearif Laerskool provided a positive update, confirming that both children are recovering well after the incident, IOL reported on Sunday.

“It is with great gratitude that we are happy to share the very good news with you: The two children who sustained injuries on Saturday, May 31, during the freak accident at the Protea Fees, were discharged from the hospital on Saturday (31/5) and Tuesday (3/6) respectively,” the school said.

“The necessary trauma counselling was given to both children, as well as their co-learners who experienced the event.”

The school expressed gratitude for the community’s support and prayers.
