Cape Town – EFF leader Julius Malema has accused former president Jacob Zuma’s uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) party of pretending to promote black unity among opposition parties while actually trying to undermine the EFF.
Malema criticised Zuma’s call for black party unity as hypocritical, pointing out that Zuma recently formed the MK party instead of joining the EFF.
“Black unity is what the EFF stands for and the EFF has always said black people must unite. It is disingenuous to form another party and say you are calling for black unity. Once you form a party, you are already dividing people,” he said.
“So if you wanted to call for unity of people, you should have joined the EFF and not formed a parallel organisation.”
Malema made the remarks while speaking outside Presley Chweneyagae’s home, where he was paying his respects after the actor’s passing last week.
He questioned why such unity calls are always directed at the EFF and not at other parties like the ANC or Patriotic Alliance (PA).
“Why is this unity of black parties only directed at the EFF? They never complain that theANC does not want to unite with them; they never complain that the Patriotic Alliance does not want to unite with them,” he said.
“Every time it’s the EFF. We are not going to allow that. You can see it’s not black unity; it’s an agenda to destroy the EFF. Why are they not giving you a report about black unity with the United Democratic Front or all these black formations that are there? We don’t buy into that story because it’s not genuine.”
Malema dismissed the unity agenda as a ploy to destroy the EFF, especially after several parties, including Xiluva and the ATM, aligned with MK ahead of the 2026 elections.
Tensions have worsened since former EFF members like Floyd Shivambu, Dali Mpofu, and Mzwanele Manyi defected to MK, with MK surpassing the EFF as the third largest party in the May 2024 elections.

“I don’t work with Floyd anywhere, Parliament, or soccer match, or anything. I don’t work with Floyd,” Malema said.
“Angifuni ukuyingena into kaFloyd, Uphi apha? (I don’t want to get involved in Floyd’s issues. Where is he here?) I’m not getting involved. Aya kwini yena (where was he going ). So he’s not our problem. We are in Parliament, we are working in Parliament and that’s it. If he comes to Parliament, he will find us rolling. The Parliament now is run by young boys, young people are running that thing and if he comes then and thinks he can impose himself on them, they are already ready for him. So you can be rest assured, he will not do anything that can undermine the superior logic of the EFF in that Parliament.”
