Cape Town – Controversial chief of staff to Agriculture Minister John Steenhuisen, Roman Cabanac, has had his contract terminated.
Cabanac announced the news on social media on Thursday, noting the termination came on his birthday and that he may contest the decision.
“I received a letter that terminates my tenure as chief of staff to the minister of agriculture. I received it yesterday, which was my birthday, so fantastic timing.
“I believe there are a few flaws with the termination letter, so I will be looking at options going forward, and I’ll keep you updated,” Cabanac said.

His appointment sparked public outrage due to past racist remarks, including tweets claiming black people are not liberals and questioning the Sharpeville Massacre.
Despite initial defence of Cabanac’s qualifications, Steenhuisen later admitted the appointment was a mistake and asked Cabanac to step down, citing the distraction it caused to the ministry’s work, The Citizen reported.
Steenhuisen accepted full responsibility for the hiring decision.
