Pietermaritzburg – One man was killed and six others injured during a suspected cash-in-transit (CIT) robbery on the R56 near the second Bainesfield offramp outside Richmond, KwaZulu-Natal, on Wednesday evening.
According to ALS Paramedics Medical Services, emergency personnel from their Cato Ridge base responded to numerous calls reporting a robbery just after 5:15pm.
Upon arrival, paramedics found what they described as “chaos and carnage” at the scene, which was scattered across a significant distance. Several vehicles, including a cash transport van, had sustained damage from both crashes and gunfire.
“Paramedics triaged the scene and immediately began treating the injured. Multiple people had sustained various injuries. One person a male who was allegedly in a taxi was caught in the cross fire and sustained gunshot wounds.
“Paramedics assessed him however unfortunately he had passed away on the scene due to the injuries sustained,” ALS said in a statement.
The entire R56 was closed to allow police to investigate the incident.
The South African Police Service has not yet issued a statement confirming arrests or further details surrounding the robbery.
