Cape Town – Police are investigating an incident at Soshanguve South Secondary School in Tshwane, where community members allegedly assaulted students with sjamboks for arriving late.
A video circulating online shows two boys being whipped as they enter the school premises.
According to The Citizen, Rise Mzansi Chief Organiser Makashule Gana claimed the school principal and governing body (SGB) invited the community members to administer corporal punishment.
He said this practice has reportedly happened before and vowed to escalate the matter to education authorities, citing that corporal punishment is illegal in South African schools.
Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane confirmed the incident is under urgent investigation.
Assault and trespassing cases have been opened, and affected pupils are receiving medical and psychological support.
The Congress of South African Students and parents have called for the principal and SGB chairperson to step down while investigations continue.
