Cape Town – The Department of Home Affairs in South Africa has extended its Saturday operating hours in May 2025 to assist naturalised citizens and permanent residents from visa-exempt countries in applying for smart ID cards, replacing the older green barcoded ID books.
The extended hours apply on 17, 24, and 31 May, from 08:00 to 13:00.
This is Phase 1 of a phased rollout aimed at enhancing security and service delivery.
Applications can be submitted at Live Capture Offices, participating bank branches, and through the eHome-Affairs portal, which also allows appointment bookings.
“All applicants will undergo verification against the National Population Register (NPR) at the Meeter-Greeter station to confirm the authenticity of their Green ID Book details.
“Permanent resident permit holders will also be checked for their country of birth, which must be among the 106 countries. Those who do not verify positively, may be accommodated during Phase 2,” the department said.
“All applications must be accompanied by the prescribed application fee of R140, 00. For applicants who are 60 years and above, no payment is required.”
