Cape Town – South African President Cyril Ramaphosa will meet US President Donald Trump at the White House next week to mend strained relations between the two countries.
Tensions escalated after Trump welcomed white Afrikaners as refugees, citing unfounded claims of genocide against white farmers in South Africa.
Trump has also cut US funding to South Africa, criticising its land reform policies and its case against Israel at the ICJ.
Pretoria has dismissed Trump’s claims as baseless, emphasising that violent crime affects all races in the country and that land reform aims to address historical injustices without targeting any racial group.
Ramaphosa hopes the meeting will help “reset” strategic ties, especially as the US remains South Africa’s second-largest trading partner after China.
“President Cyril Ramaphosa will embark on a working visit to the United States of America from 19 – 22 May 2025.
“On Wednesday, 21 May 2025, President Ramaphosa will meet with President Donald Trump at the White House, in Washington DC to discuss bilateral, regional and global issues of interest.
“The President’s visit to the US provides a platform to reset the strategic relationship between the two countries,” the presidency said in a statement.
