Name change planned for major SA international airport

Cape Town – Johannesburg Executive Mayor Dada Morero has announced plans to rename Lanseria International Airport to strengthen its connection to the city.

Speaking during the State of the City address debate on 8 May 2025, Morero said the name change forms part of a broader vision to enhance the airport’s identity and brand.

Lanseria, South Africa’s only privately-owned international airport, is undergoing significant upgrades to increase capacity and attract more regional carriers.

The expansion includes a new fuel depot, air traffic control tower, maintenance and repair facilities, and upgraded taxiways.

Founded in 1972, the airport has grown into a major aviation hub, with a history that includes welcoming Nelson Mandela upon his release from prison in 1990.

According to Daily Investor, it has changed ownership multiple times and is now set for another shift, as private equity firm Harith moves to acquire full ownership by buying out its partners in the Pan African Infrastructure Development Fund.

Investors exiting the fund include the Government Employees Pension Fund, Absa, and Old Mutual, the report said.
