Cape Town – A 26-year-old member of Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) was shot execution style outside his home in Hilltop, near Trenance Park, KwaZulu-Natal, on Saturday morning.
According to a statement released by RUSA, the officer was discovered unresponsive by neighbours shortly before 10:00.
Reaction officers and paramedics were dispatched to the scene and arrived at approximately 09:47, where they found the man lying in a pool of blood in his yard. He had sustained a single gunshot wound to the head.
“A spent 9mm cartridge was recovered on scene,” the statement said.
The officer’s valuables were still in his possession, and there was no indication that the suspect had entered his home, suggesting robbery was not the motive.
Neighbours reported hearing a gunshot before finding the victim’s body.
While the motive behind the killing remains unclear, RUSA noted the officer had previously received multiple death threats from criminals apprehended by the unit.
Police have not confirmed any links between the threats and Saturday’s execution-style killing.
An investigation is underway.
RUSA has urged anyone with information regarding the incident to contact their Operations Centre on 086 1234 333.
