Cape Town – South African motorists received a welcome drop in fuel prices this week due to a stronger rand and lower Brent crude oil prices.
Early data suggests another fuel price decrease may be on the way in early June 2025, The South African reported on Friday.
According to projections from the Central Energy Fund as of 8 May, petrol may decrease by around 52–53 cents per litre, diesel by 88 cents, and illuminating paraffin by 85 cents, the report said.
Final price adjustments will be confirmed in early June, taking effect from midnight on Tuesday, 3 June 2025.
Fuel prices in South Africa are mainly influenced by global oil prices and the rand/dollar exchange rate, which currently stand at $63.50 per barrel and R18.18/$ respectively.
Mineral and Petroleum Resources Minister Gwede Mantashe on Sunday 04 May, announced fuel price adjustments effective 7 May.
Petrol 93 and 95 decreased by 22 cents per litre, while diesel prices dropped by 41–42 cents per litre.
Illuminating paraffin decreased by 31 cents (wholesale), with a 41-cent drop in its national retail price. However, LPGas rose by 46 cents per kilogram.
