Cape Town – Over the past five financial years, more than R19.52 million has been collected through traffic fines issued at OR Tambo International Airport, with the highest amount (R8.78 million) collected in 2019/20.
According to Daily Investor, Justice Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi shared this in response to a parliamentary question.
South Africa currently operates two traffic fine systems: the Criminal Procedure Act (CPA), which handles offences as crimes, and AARTO, an administrative system to be rolled out nationally in 2025 with a demerit system.
In April, the Automobile Association highlighted the ten most frequent traffic offences in South Africa. Leading the list were speeding, disobeying stop signs and traffic signals, and using mobile phones while driving.
Other prevalent violations included not wearing seat belts, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, reckless or negligent driving, parking illegally, and operating a vehicle without a valid driver’s licence.
Nationwide, municipalities earned R6.26 billion from fines and related penalties in 2023, the report said.
