Cape Town – Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association secretary Mongi Titi was reportedly fatally shot at the Nyanga taxi rank in Cape Town on Wednesday evening.
According to police, unknown gunmen opened fire on Titi, who was in a parked Toyota Fortuner, and fled the scene.
No arrests have been made and the motive is under investigation.
“The information indicates unknown gunmen approached a Toyota Fortuner parked in the vicinity of the terminus, after which they opened fire on the occupant, a 45-year-old man who sustained fatal wounds. The victim was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel,” Times Live quoted police spokesperson W/O Joseph Swartbooi as saying.
The taxi body has called for a full investigation and urged the public to assist the police.
“His untimely death is a devastating loss to our organisation and to the industry at large. Mr Titi was a committed leader who played a significant role in our ongoing efforts to build a more unified, safe, and professional taxi sector in the province.
“Santaco Western Cape calls for a full and thorough investigation into this heinous crime, and we urge law enforcement authorities to act swiftly to bring those responsible to justice,” Santaco said.
